Summertime, and the living is easy. Or, at least it should be. We are so lucky to live in sunny San Diego, where the weather is pretty perfect year-round, and summer in SoCal has an extra special appeal. We spend most of our off days outside; biking, beaching, or just chilling in the park with a good book. And when you’re done worshipping the sun gods, you should come home to a similarly relaxed atmosphere. We have some great tips to create a chill summertime vibe for your home that will stay on-trend throughout the year.
Tip 1 – Lighten the load
If you’ve been following us on Facebook or Instagram, then you’ll be well aware of our love affair with light neutral colors. Designing with crisp whites and light grays is a great way to keep your space feeling light and fresh all year long. Switching to white or gray bedding, drapes, and bath towels is probably the easiest route to creating a calm, tranquil space.
Tip 2 – Leave & let live
Once you have established a nice neutral color palette, add some accents with a little summer flair! We are really into soft pastels and tropical florals this season. Pale mint greens, blush pink tones, and light corals work perfectly together! Look for throw pillows and blankets with tropical prints – Palms and Bird of Paradise patterns are very on-trend this year.
We’ve also become enamored with some of the beautiful hibiscus flower prints we’re seeing out there. Designer, Justina Blakeney has a fantastic line of tropical print throw pillows available at Jungalow – Pick a theme or mix-and-match! You really can’t go wrong with these colors and patterns.
Tip 3 – Hang out with hanging plants
In keeping with our floral theme, we are loving the hanging plant trend! Common house plants like Philodendron or Pothos look great dangling from above in Macramé plant hangers. They add interest to your otherwise bare and boring ceiling, and literally breathe life into your space. Plants are a great addition to your home décor any time of the year.
If you’re limited on space, or prefer a more minimalist option, we are huge fans of Hanging Terrariums using either Air Plants or Succulents. Check out the new Balboa Home shop tab on our website for some great home and gift options.
Tip 4 – Take it down to the wire (wire furniture)
NO WIRE HANGERS – EVER! But wire furniture is totally cool. Whether it’s an outdoor chair, or indoor coffee table, metal wire framed furniture has caught our eye this year!
There are some very innovative designs out there that are surprisingly inexpensive – think IKEA price points! For more wire inspo, check out some of our favorite chairs and tables from LA based Bend Seating.
Tip 5 – Loosen up a little
The best part about Summer is that everything just seems a little more chill. Flip flops, tank tops, and lazy days – it’s all about relaxing and living the good life. We think the same rules should apply to your interiors. Leave your bed unmade, drape your towels, adopt the messy, Boho-chic look. After all, it’s Summertime and the living should be easy. Cheers!
