With a new season upon us, you might feel like it’s time to make a change at home. Many of our clients are interested in remodeling the spaces where they spend a lot of time: and kitchens are usually at the top of the list! Using the warmth and light of Spring as inspiration for this post, we’re sharing some timeless ideas to consider for your next kitchen remodel. If you have any questions surrounding the design and functionality of your space, we’d love to chat about your future dream space.
OUR TOP 8 KITCHEN REMODEL IDEAS
1. Add Bold Colors
There’s no rule that says your kitchen cabinetry should be bland. White kitchens look great, but it doesn’t have to be that way. And while changing your cabinet color can be a lot less expensive than buying new cabinets altogether, please don’t believe those HGTV shows that make this seem like a super easy weekend task! We have seen many eager homeowners skipping to the hardware store with unbridled DIY confidence, only to find (after spending countless days attempting to do it themselves), that the process is much more complicated than they had initially anticipated. Changing the color of your cabinetry is not as simple as re-painting a wall. Please consider hiring a licensed painter for this one! One of the advantages of working with design professionals is that you can rest easy knowing that the redesign of your kitchen will come to fruition beautifully, on time, and hassle-free.
When it comes to changing up your kitchen cabinetry, here are some color palettes we’ve had our eyes on lately:
2. MIX UP YOUR CABINETRY STYLE
To further expand on cabinetry design in your future remodel, we suggest mixing up the materials and elements. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Think: a mixture of standard cabinet doors, with a couple thoughtfully placed glass doors to reveal a more curated aesthetic. This offers a comfortable balance for homeowners that want a beautiful display, without the commitment of open shelving.
We also love incorporating large-scale drawers into our cabinetry design. At first, it can be hard to imagine pulling your dishes, glasses, and cookware out of drawers. However, our clients find that it not only increases their storage space, but it’s also a more functional and ergonomic storage solution than traditional cabinets (no more hunching over or grabbing a step stool to search through those pesky “too-high” or “too-low” cabinet doors).
3. BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
We strongly believe that Mother Nature is the best designer – and what better way to incorporate nature into your home than literally inviting it inside! We live for indoor/outdoor spaces, and in Southern California, where our clients enjoy a temperate climate pretty much year-round, it’s a no-brainer to create living spaces that seamlessly transition to the great outdoors.
For instance, we helped a homeowner in Normal Heights modernize their lovely craftsman home without taking away any of its natural charm. Typically, craftsman style homes have smaller, closed-off kitchens. We helped our client open up the space with a large sliding pocket door – which created an indoor/outdoor living area. As you can see from the photo below, the expanded opening offers the interior kitchen much more natural light and creates a seamless transition between both spaces. 4. Update Your Light Fixtures
Adding airy light fixtures in your kitchen and dining room can be a great way to brighten up the room and add more texture and character. Try a woven or rattan light fixture above your kitchen island or dining table. These light fixtures are offered in all shapes, sizes, and colors so you can find the perfect option for your kitchen. If woven fixtures aren’t your thing, try a glowing frosted glass fixture to brighten up the space and add more warmth to the room. The possibilities are endless!
5. Change Your Backsplash
We believe that a tile backsplash should be more than just a shield to protect your wall from sprays and splatters. It should make a statement and be the focal point of your space. A traditional subway tile in a deep forest green (as pictured in our recent remodel below), or a hexagonal tile with a graphic pattern can completely change the entire vibe of your kitchen! And While choosing a new backsplash tile for your kitchen may feel like a daunting task, there’s no need to panic. You can rely on our experts to recommend bold, colorful options that will stand the test of time.
6. Add Some Organic Elements
A timeless design theme that has gained popularity in recent years is organic style. No, we are not suggesting that you adorn your home in bohemian textiles from the 1960’s. Organic style simply means incorporating warm neutral tones, using pops of wood, greenery, or creating larger window and door openings to let the sunshine in. We love organic style (especially in the kitchen), because of the inviting, calming elements that will keep guests happily gathering in your space for years to come.
7. Go Green
Speaking of greenery… there is nothing that brings a burst of vitality to your space quite like plant babies. Adding succulents and other greenery is a great way to bring more life and color into your kitchen without the clutter of traditional decor. During the design process, we consider the lighting in your space, so that the plants we incorporate will thrive! We love introducing herbs or drought-tolerant plants that require minimal upkeep yet add fresh pops of color throughout the year.
8. Large Kitchen Islands
Large kitchen islands are an evergreen trend that we don’t see dying anytime soon. Your kitchen is a space to gather, to spend time with family, and to make memories with the ones you love. Large kitchen islands not only offer more seating options for your guests, they also provide much needed extra storage. This is also a great area to incorporate large pull-out drawers as mentioned earlier! There are many ways to expand the functionality of your kitchen with a large island. Don’t forget about the added benefit of additional countertop space! Connect with our team to see how we can help improve your space.
